Another must-see in San Francisco, here’s its most iconic street, the famous Lombard Street! Did you know before arriving in San Francisco that you were going to see one of the steepest streets in the world? In reality, it’s not the steepest street in the world, nor even in San Francisco for that matter! What makes it so famous is its 8 zigzags. Seeing cars go down that road is an attraction itself! Lombard Street is very long. It crosses San Francisco from East to West, from the Presidio to the Embarcadero. Our interest however is focused on this small portion, from Hyde to Leavenworth. We find ourselves in the Russian Hill district. We owe this famous road to Carl Henry; who owned the block and who decided in 1992 to flatten the slope. Indeed, at the time, vehicles were pulled by horses, so the slope was way too steep for them. So he drew 8 curves, in order to facilitate traffic and to reduce the slope from 23% to 16% ,which is still huge! To this day, Lombard Street is one of the most popular places in San Francisco, because, we have to admit, in addtion to its originality, this street looks rather nice. Entirely paved, it is bordered with colorful flowers, and offers a wonderful panorama of San Francisco. If you feel like taking it by car, you should know that it may be flooded, and also that it is a one way street: you can only go down.
