This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Blois, Castle life in the Loire Valley

Introducing the Hôtel-Dieu of Blois, a monumental complex of great importance, nestled on the banks of the Loire River. Originally a monastic property owned by the Benedictine order since the Middle Ages, the building underwent a complete transformation in the 19th century to become a full-scale hospital. It wasn’t until 1865, following a series of expansions and renovations, that the Hôtel-Dieu took on its current look – that of a major pavilion framed by two unified side wings. Up until the 1980s, this 12,500m² complex was home to several generations of men and women, both patients and healthcare professionals. The property then passed into the hands of the town council that used it to house the offices of the Loir-et-Cher Departmental Directorate. This 35-year-long chapter is about to come to an end, as plans are underway to breathe new life into this landmark and prevent further decay. Whether it’s for cultural, administrative or medical purposes, the future of this building is yet to be written.
