Roquette district

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Arles, 2000 years of history
You’re now at the heart of the historic Roquette district. Narrow, winding streets lined with charming houses, sun-kissed stone façades adorned with climbing plants and brightly painted shutters adding a splash of color – a picturesque backdrop that will capture the hearts of romantics and photographers alike. This district dates back to the 12th century and it came into being southwest of the city walls. It was mainly occupied by fishermen and other craftsmen working on the river. It even had its own bakery, mills, and even a ferry to cross the Rhône. It was practically a town within the town. By the 13th century, however, the district was brought within the city’s newly constructed fortifications, due to the looming threat of enemy attacks. You can still see remnants of these defenses today on Rue de l’Observatoire. There’s in fact a medieval watchtower which came to be known as the “Tour de l’écorchoir”, aka the Skinning Tower. You see, it was originally built for defense purposes, but was later repurposed as a slaughterhouse, hence the name. Wealthy merchants and prominent families also lived in this district, leaving us today with a number of fine townhouses. The 19th century saw the demise of the inland waterway industry, bringing about the district’s gradual downfall and abandonment. Nowadays, however, La Roquette is in a protected area and has undergone extensive restoration. Today, it’s entering a new chapter in its history, as a favorite go-to spot for the locals. Be sure to come back to browse the picturesque designer boutiques, and soak up the lively atmosphere. Continue down the Rue de la Roquette all the way to the charming Paul Doumeur square, where you’ll find our next point of interest.
