Arlaten Museum

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Arles, 2000 years of history
We’re now passing by the beautifully restored façade of the Arlaten Museum. It was founded in 1896 by the famous Provençal writer and poet Paul Mistral, who was deeply committed to preserving the cultural heritage of his region. You might not know him, but he actually won the Nobel Prize in Literature back in 1904 for his contributions to the Provençal language and culture. So it makes sense that he created a museum dedicated to the region’s customs and traditions. If you have time, definitely check it out! The museum houses numerous artifacts and exhibits, offering a captivating glimpse into Provençal life throughout the ages. The moment you step inside, you’ll be greeted by the ruins of the ancient Roman forum. Further on, you’ll find traditional clothing and costumes worn by local people throughout the ages, tools and other agricultural implements that chronicle the evolution of farming, local handicrafts such as basketry, pottery and ceramics, and a wealth of artifacts hinting to the region’s diverse trades. You’ll also see works of art, antique furniture and even musical instruments. An exceptional museum that takes you on a journey into the very heart of Provence! Here, old meets new, largely thanks to the contributions of yet another local, deeply attached to his home town. The famous fashion designer Christian Lacroix played a part in the museum’s renovation, designing the giant tapestry that adorns the wall behind the beautiful metal staircase. This museum is a must-see while in Arles! Don’t miss it!
