St. Charles Church

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Vienna, The Empress of Austria

You’re now standing in front of a real masterpiece, Vienna’s iconic St. Charles Church. Even if churches aren’t usually your thing, it’s hard not to be moved by its beauty. That grand dome and those twisting columns are simply stunning. It’s considered one of the finest examples of Baroque architecture from the 18th century—not just in Vienna or Austria, but in all of Central Europe. St. Charles Church is a votive church, which means it was built as the result of a vow. In 1713, during a devastating outbreak of the plague, Emperor Charles VI promised to build a church in honour of his patron saint, Charles Borromeo—a bishop remembered for helping plague victims in Milan. The architect wanted to blend different styles, drawing inspiration from the Hagia Sophia in Constantinople, once the second capital of the Roman Empire. The church also echoes ancient Roman architecture, highlighting the connection between the Holy Roman Empire and the Roman legacy. The dome has been modelled after St. Peter’s Basilica, while the two columns by the entrance are inspired by Trajan’s Column. Perched on top are imperial eagles—clear symbols of the Habsburg monarchy. Above the entrance, the inscription on the pediment reads: “I shall fulfil my vows in the presence of those who fear you”. For a small entrance fee, you can reach the top of the dome to admire the breathtaking frescoes painted by Austrian artist Johann Michael Rottmayr. It’s no wonder it’s one of Vienna’s best-loved treasures.
