Ueno Park

07 parc d ueno tokyo 1 poi grand

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Tokyo, The Phoenix City

You’ve probably already noticed that this park is full of treasures, as it retraces the city’s historic events and traditions. Yet, did you know about its history? Let’s take a step back into Tokyo’s past to understand why it inspires millions of visitors each year. The reason why you’re seeing all these statues, temples and pagodas is because Ueno Park once was a vast religious complex, known as Kaneiji Temple, the largest Buddhist temple in all of Edo. Though many of its structures were destroyed at the end of that period, a few remnants still remain today. The park took shape over the years until 1924, when it was gifted to the city by the Emperor himself. This park is home to wildlife and plants: in the springtime, the cherry blossoms steal the show by lighting up the paths; whereas in summer, lotus flowers unveil their beautiful white and pink petals above the Shinobazu Pond. There, you’ll also observe different bird species enjoying the lotus leaves as they play around and freshen up. Just nearby, the Ueno Zoo opens doors to the animal kingdom, where you’ll meet species from all around the world. Still not pleased? If you’re more drawn to culture than creatures, the park won’t disappoint. Showcasing a large array of museums, there’s something for everyone here: Western art, science, Japanese history, or the everyday traditions of Tokyo’s people. Welcoming over 10 million visitors a year, Ueno Park is a peaceful refuge in the heart of Tokyo, offering a quiet escape from the city’s liveliness. It’s also a way to learn more about the city’s history, where statues and museums pay tribute to Japan’s most influential figures. A small break offering both nature and culture, where you’re bound to lose track of time as you explore this peaceful park.
