The Pest district

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Budapest, Visiting the Queen of the Danube
The Danube splits Budapest down the middle – both geographically and culturally, and it’s always been like this. For a long time, Hungary’s capital was divided into separate towns. It became one city in 1873, when Buda and Pest were united. Right now, you’re in Pest, the lively, urban side of the city. In the past, it was home to both the bourgeoisie and Hungarian working class. Today, you’ll find some of the city’s most iconic landmarks, along with most of its theatres, traditional restaurants, shopping streets, museums, and other cultural and tourist spots. There’s always something to do and see in this district!
