The Buda District

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Budapest, Visiting the Queen of the Danube
Welcome to the west bank of the Danube, welcome to Buda! You’re standing in the oldest part of Budapest, perched up on these green hills with a view that’s hard to beat. Take a moment to soak it in : the cobbled streets, the baroque buildings, the winding paths… it’s like stepping straight into a storybook. For centuries, this was the capital of the Kingdom of Hungary, long before Budapest came to be. While Pest spread out across the flatlands, it was up here that kings ruled. Power, nobility, grand palaces, it all happened on these heights, 235 metres above the river. Then, in 1873, everything changed. Three separate towns : Buda, Pest, and Óbuda, were merged into one, and Budapest was officially born. But Buda kept its own identity. It’s quiet, elegant, and full of charm, a world away from the hustle of downtown. And everywhere you turn, the past is right there beside you. From Roman ruins to Ottoman baths, from medieval kings to Habsburg emperors, history is layered into every corner. You’ll soon see for yourself: Buda’s home to medieval castles, 500-year-old Turkish baths, gothic churches, and some of the most breathtaking views in all of Central Europe.
