St. Stephen’s Basilica

01 basilique saint etienne poi grand

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Budapest, Visiting the Queen of the Danube

Compared to most of Europe’s major religious buildings, St. Stephen’s Basilica was built relatively recently! Inaugurated in 1905, this architectural masterpiece holds an important place in the heart of Budapest despite its young age. Originally, a wealthy Hungarian and several religious people made plans to build a church here. Today, the basilica is known for its massive dimensions. Let’s take a closer look: the basilica is 55 metres wide, 87 metres long, and 96 metres tall. This explains why it took over half a century to build… Beyond its size, it’s also the tallest point in Budapest—equal in height to the Parliament. It’s named after Hungary’s first king, Stephen I, and is actually home to his right hand, one of the country’s most sacred relics. Known as the Holy Right, you can see his mummified hand by paying the chapel’s entrance fee. You also have to pay to access the dome terrace. It’s only open during the summer, and offers a beautiful view over the city. But you don’t need a ticket for everything. Entry to the basilica is free, where you can discover its stunning marble, mosaics and stained-glass decorations. So, enjoy your visit in this magnificent place of reflection. But know that before becoming a holy ground, it was actually home to a former theatre that hosted animal fights!
