Andrássy Avenue

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Budapest, Visiting the Queen of the Danube
At 2,310 metres long, Andrássy Avenue is one of Budapest’s main and oldest streets. Constructed in 1872, it’s been bustling with people ever since! The name honours Gyula Andrássy — a Hungarian count and statesman known for his revolutionary stance against the Habsburg rule, especially during the 1848 Revolution. This grand boulevard was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002. It’s lined with beautifully preserved façades, houses, and Renaissance buildings from the 19th and 20th centuries. You may be distracted by its lively atmosphere, and the many shops around, but below you runs the Budapest Metro. This is the second-oldest metro in Europe, just after London!
