This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Zurich, A City Worth Its Weight in Gold
You are now standing in front of the majestic Zurich Opera House. Opened to the public in 1891, the building was originally called the City Theatre since it hosted concerts, opera, plays, and even lectures. It was a kind of elegant all-in-one cultural venue. Then, 40 years later, when Zurich inaugurated its new Schauspielhaus theatre, the Stadttheater focused on opera, operettas, and ballet, officially becoming the Zurich Opera House in 1964. Today, thanks to its rich and ambitious programming, it is considered one of the most successful and active opera stages in Europe. A true symbol of the city. The Opera also hosts open-air performances such as “Opera for All” and “Ballet for All”, offering people from all backgrounds the chance to enjoy top-quality shows for free. In 2019, it was even named “Best Opera House in the World” at the Oper Awards.
