This beautiful neo-Gothic Town Hall is adjoined to a church, as it was built on what used to be an abbey for women. The reason behind the construction of such an imposing and vibrant city hall emerged from a phenomena called Gründerzeit. It’s an economic boom that occured in 1871 after France sent financial compensation regarding the war, which also led to the new German Empire to be formed. In 1893, Zurich grew from 28 000 to more than 100 000 inhabitants. As a new large city, it was only logical to construct a building worthy of its name. In the 2000s, the structure was entirely renovated to make way for what you see today. Step inside, and you’ll see how beautiful it’s become.  Temporary exhibitions are often hosted below the town hall’s arcades, mainly focusing on Zurich and its region.
