Hechtplatz

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Zurich, A City Worth Its Weight in Gold
You’re now walking through the charming little Hechtplatz square, home to the theater that shares its name. It was founded in 1959 as a cabaret, and has been publicly funded by the city of Zurich since 1961. The building was originally a commercial space and even served as a fire station before being rebuilt as a theater with an adjacent café/bar. Counting 260 seats, the Hechtplatz Theater mainly presents traditional Swiss performing arts, focusing on cabaret, satire, clowns, mimes, and musical acts. Since 1981, it has been part of the Swiss inventory of cultural assets of regional significance. The theater is also famous for its fairy tale stage, created especially for Zurich’s youngest audiences. Each winter for three months, Swiss actors, performers, and well-known personalities bring to life a magical fairy tale drawn from national folklore.
