Text version

If you’ve never been to Zurich, you might picture sleek watches, luxury cars, and a discreet kind of wealth. And you wouldn’t be wrong—Zurich is famously prosperous, home to major financial institutions and one of the highest standards of living in the world. Back in 2012, The Economist even ranked it as the most expensive city on the planet. But there’s far more to Zurich than its polished image. This is a city where centuries-old churches and cobbled medieval streets meet cutting-edge architecture and buzzing cultural venues. Nestled between a pristine lake and Alpine foothills, Zurich invites you to slow down, look closer, and uncover a world of traditions, festivals, history, and panoramic views. Good to know !

Recommended departure

No need to worry about where to begin! Our tours are designed as a loop, so you can jump in wherever you are. The navigation system and audioguide will automatically adjust to your location. However, if you happen to be nearby, we do have a preferred starting point: Bürkliplatz, opposite the lake.

Recommended parking

Carparkplatz Mythenquai – Mythenquai 19 (the cheapest parking near the city centre)
Parking regulations in Zurich are very strict. To avoid any unpleasant surprises in all blue and white zones, as well as different authorisations, we advise you to park in one of the city’s underground parkings. If you wish to better understand all different zones: yellow signifies no parking at all, as they are reserved. You can park in white zones for a maximum duration of 30 minutes (sometimes 2 to 4h) and under a parking meter. As for blue zones, you’ll have to purchase a specific parking card on the parkkarten.ch website. At night, from 9pm to 8am, almost all parking is free. Parking in blue zones is also free on Sundays and bank holidays.

Climate

A city surrounded by mountains, Zurich is situated in a temperate zone, meaning that all four seasons are quite different. In winter, temperatures can drop below 0°C/32°F, but it’s the perfect time for skiing. In the summertime, maximal temperatures can elevate at 30°C/86°F. There isn’t any season where there’s more rain than another. Other than skiing, the best time to visit is from mid-April to mid-October. If you’re coming in either July or August, don’t forget to bring your swimsuit to enjoy the lake!

Currency

Zurich, located in the German-speaking part of Switzerland, uses the Swiss Franc. The currency is usually quite close in value to the Euro, so it’s relatively easy to understand prices. And no, you’re not dreaming—there’s no need to divide prices by two or three. Zurich is expensive, very expensive. It’s an important detail to keep in mind when planning your trip.

Got Some Extra Time?

Uetliberg Mountain: the best panoramic hike near Zurich

Looking for a nature escape just minutes from the city? Head to Uetliberg Mountain, Zurich’s very own local peak. At 869 meters above sea level, it offers one of the best panoramic views over Lake Zurich, the city, and the distant Alps—a true postcard-perfect scene. From the summit, scenic trails lead along the ridge, ideal for hiking or trail running. In winter, these paths become sledding tracks. One highlight is the Planet Trail, a two-hour walk from Uetliberg to Felsenegg. Designed to represent the solar system at scale, each meter equals a million

kilometers in space—you’ll journey from the Sun to Pluto with engaging stops along the way. The hike ends at a stunning overlook at 800 meters, where you can catch a funicular down to Adliswil and hop on a train back to Zurich in no time.

Swimming in the Limmat River: Zurich’s top summer experience

If you’re visiting Zurich in the summer, don’t miss one of the city’s most beloved traditions: swimming in the Limmat River. You’ll come across signs for “Badis”, Zurich’s public outdoor pools and swimming spots. Along the calm shores of Lake Zurich, you’ll find grassy parks, sandy beaches, diving platforms, and family-friendly zones. But the river brings a more adventurous vibe! Some natural pools let you float along the gentle current, and several offer women-only or men-only areas. Refreshing, fun, and free—just bring a swimsuit!

Urban Surfing in Zurich: Catch a wave in the city

Yes, you can surf in Zurich! For a dose of adrenaline, head to Urbansurf, a surf platform located next to the hip urban garden Frau Gerolds Garten. Whether you’re a seasoned surfer or a total beginner, you can ride artificial waves right in the heart of Zurich. Lessons are available, and the vibrant setting—with food trucks, cocktails, and live DJs—makes it a must-visit for anyone looking for a fun, summery atmosphere.

Le Corbusier Pavilion: Zurich’s modernist gem

Architecture enthusiasts will love the Pavillon Le Corbusier, the final masterpiece by the iconic Swiss-French architect. Located by the lake, this striking building is open from May to November and has been part of Zurich’s public museum network since 2019. Rote Fabrik: Zurich’s alternative cultural hotspot

A must-see for music fans and creatives, Rote Fabrik (Red Factory) is a former silk factory turned avant-garde arts venue. Located on the lake’s western shore, this dynamic space hosts live concerts, indie films, experimental theatre, and art exhibitions. Past performers include Nirvana and Red Hot Chili Peppers! With a lively café/bar and free Wi-Fi, it’s also a great spot to relax or work in an inspiring, offbeat setting.

Frequently asked questions

What to do in Zurich in one day or over a weekend?

A single day may fly by, but it’s still enough time to take in some of Zurich’s must-see attractions—like the Swiss National Museum. Housed in a magnificent building from the late 19th century, the museum features an impressive collection of artifacts spanning from prehistory to modern times. In the afternoon, explore Zurich’s city center and wander through the Schipfe district. Nestled in the old town, this charming neighborhood is perfect for a leisurely stroll. If you’re in the mood for shopping, don’t miss Bahnhofstrasse—the most famous avenue in Switzerland, home to top luxury brands.
If you’re staying for an extra day, start with a visit to the beautiful Fraumünster Church, a true symbol of the city. And to wrap up your weekend the right way, treat yourself to a boat ride on the crystal-clear waters of Lake Zurich.

When to visit?

Any time of year is a good time to enjoy Zurich’s fresh air and vibrant atmosphere. But if you want to experience a truly local celebration, mark your calendar for the third Monday in April. That’s when the Sechseläuten festival takes place—a beloved tradition in Zurich for over 120 years. The festivities begin on Sunday with a costumed children’s parade, and continue on Monday with the symbolic burning of the “Böögg,” a snowman-like figure stuffed with fireworks.

How to get around?

If there’s one thing Zurich locals are proud of, it’s their public transportation system. Trams, buses, and trains are so efficient that many residents prefer them over driving. There’s even a museum dedicated to the history of the city’s trams! With 15 tram lines crisscrossing the city, getting from point A to B is a breeze. For an even smoother experience, grab a Zürich Card—it gives you unlimited travel for 24 or 72 hours. The card covers all tram and bus lines, boat trips on the lake and the Limmat River (Zurich’s main waterway), and even the Rigiblick and Dolder funiculars.
