World War II Memorial

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Washington, Where American Democracy was born
As the capital of the United States, Washington has more than a hundred memorials, paying tribute to the nation’s history and to great figures. In front of you is the World War II Memorial. Inaugurated on May 29, 2004, it honours the American states and districts that took part in the conflict. There are 56 columns arranged in a semicircle surrounding the fountain. Each column bears the name of an American state or territory and is decorated with a bronze wreath. Two triumphal arches stand on either side of the fountain, commemorating the victory of the 16 million American soldiers who served in the war, and America’s contribution to peace. Inside, four eagle statues carry a laurel wreath. The central wall displays 4,048 gold stars, each one representing 100 Americans who lost their lives in the war. Engraved on the wall is the inscription: “Here, we mark the price of freedom.” Opposite this, the ramp leading to the memorial is lined with bas-reliefs depicting various scenes of the American war effort. Its official inauguration saw a crowd of thousands, including hundreds of veterans, stand here as President George W. Bush opened this significant monument – a project that began in 1987.
