Tidal Basin

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Washington, Where American Democracy was born
This large body of water is called the Tidal Basin. It’s a man-made reservoir, created in the 1880s. The Tidal Basin is famous for its many memorials, as well as the stunning cherry trees that bloom every spring. They were a gift to the city of Washington from the mayor of Tokyo, Yukio Ozaki, in 1912 as a gesture to strengthen the friendship between Japan and the United States. Every spring, the National Cherry Blossom Festival celebrates the blooming of these cherry trees. There are bike tours around the basin, art exhibitions, kimono parades, dancing, music, and martial arts demonstrations. Washington D.C. is brought to life during this festival, and the cherry blossoms turn a beautiful pink.
