Old Post Office Tower

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Washington, Meeting its cultural identity
This is the beautiful Old Post Office building, which used to be the city’s postal headquarters. Built between 1892 and 1899, this monument is known for its impressive neo-Romanesque architecture. It is also hard to ignore its iconic 96-meter-high tower, offering an incredible view of the city—all for free! The rest of the building is now a luxury hotel, which used to belong to Donald Trump. The entire structure has been classified as a historical monument since 1973. Fun fact: it only served as a post office until 1914, before becoming a federal office during the 20th century. Many thought it was going to be demolished in the 1920s as new federal buildings were being constructed nearby. Local residents protested to save it and thanks to their efforts, the building was preserved and renovated. Afterwards, it continued to serve as an office space. In 2016, the building’s restoration was finally finished, transforming the old post office into a luxury hotel. While its exterior is impressive, its interior is less so… A Vanity Fair critic even ranked it as the third worst hotel in the world. Nonetheless, it is still considered one of the most luxurious worldwide. In 2022, the property was sold to a new group and now operates under the name of Waldorf Astoria Washington DC. Take your time visiting the tower, as it’s a great alternative if you couldn’t go on top of the Washington Monument! After all, it’s the third tallest building in the city!
