National Mall

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Washington, Meeting its cultural identity
The National Mall is the most historic and visited part of Washington D.C. This vast public park stretches from the Capitol to the Washington Monument. It was originally designed around 1800 by Pierre Charles L’Enfant, the French architect who also drew the plans for the city.
However, L’Enfant was removed from the project before constructions even began due to his difficult temperament. As he was angry, he left with all his architectural plans. Fortunately, Benjamin Banneker managed to reconstruct the city’s layout from memory, so L’Enfant’s vision for Washington still came to life. Despite his significant role, L’Enfant received little recognition or financial compensation for his work. It’s also thanks to his drawings that the National Mall came into existence, gradually taking shape throughout the 19th century. It became home to many of the nation’s most important government buildings, including the notorious White House and Capitol. It is a place of knowledge and remembrance, featuring numerous museums on American history, as well as memorials honoring the country’s historic events and key historical figures. The National Mall has also been the place of many public demonstrations and protests, where American citizens fight for their rights and protest against government decisions. Each year, more than 24 million visitors stroll through this historic park, admiring one of the most important places in the United States!
