Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Washington, Meeting its cultural identity
Topping the fountain, you’ll find the statue of one of the most famous figures in history: Christopher Columbus. On either side of him, the two figures represent the Old World and the New World. The base just beneath his feet is a ship’s prow, adorned with a female figure representing discovery. The top of the fountain is crowned with a globe, representing the explorer’s voyage to find the New World. At the back of the monument, you’ll find a carved medallion with portraits of Ferdinand and Isabella, the Catholic Monarchs who financed Columbus’s expedition. Designed by sculptor Lorado Z. Taft, the fountain was unveiled here in 1912. This sculpture honours the Italian navigator who paved the way for European exploration and colonisation of the Americas.
