Having witnessed every U.S. president come and go since its founding in 1800, Washington D.C. is full of history. That same year, the White House became their offical residence, and over time, presidents have not only left their personal touch on the decor but have also brought along their pets — some of which, as you’ll soon discover, were quite exotic! John Adams came here with an alligator, gifted to him by General Lafayette. Martin Van Buren briefly raised two baby tigers, presented to him by the Sultan of Oman. Even crazier, Calvin Coolidge was inseparable from his pet hippopotamus, Billy, and his raccoon, Rebecca. Woodrow Wilson kept a herd of sheep on the White House lawn to help with grass maintenance. But it was Theodore Roosevelt who took things to the next level, bringing over 50 animals to the White House, including a bear, a hyena, an owl, and even a badger! Yes, you heard it right—he was just a step away from turning the White House into a zoo! As you can see, American presidents were far from lonely in this big building!

Another fascinating aspect of Washington D.C. is its deep connection to music. The city has been home to a thriving African American community, many of whom were pioneers of jazz. While jazz originated in Louisiana, it quickly spread to other cities, including Washington where some of its most influential musicians were born—such as Shirley Horn, Andrew White, and the legendary Duke Ellington. This musical legacy has made Washington one of the country’s most lively cities, with blues, gospel, hip-hop, and R&B also sharing some roots here. Many of Washington’s concert halls celebrate these music genres.

But now let’s talk about a rather unusual monument in the capital… Its cathedral! You may think it’s just an ordinary cathedral, for it is built throughout the 20th century and one of the largest in the world. But what makes it truly unique is its gargoyle collection. Fun fact: one of them is no other than Darth Vader, the iconic Star Wars villain! A little tribute to George Lucas, no doubt. There is still so much to learn about Washington, but you’ll discover more during your visit!
