Temple of Augustus and Livia

07 temple d auguste et de livie vienne 1

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Vienne (France), The Holy City

You are now in front of one of the only two fully preserved roman temples in France, with the other being in Nimes. Approach to get a closer look. It is truly a vestige of Vienne’s gallo-roman history. This temple was built during the reign of Emperor Augustus, in the 1st century BC and was named after him and his wife, Livia. The temple was part of the forum, also known as the main place. During the Gallic Wars of the 50s BC, the town rallied to Julius Caesar, who, as well as Augustus, showed their appreciation by building numerous great temples and other premises. This temple was used  as a church all throughout the Middle Age, from the 6th century until the French Revolution, that’s why it is so well preserved.  As of 1795, the commercial and peace justice courts moved in, and 30 years later, it became home to the town’s museum and library. In 1840, after the visit of the famous author Prosper Merimée, this temple was listed as a historical monument, making it imperative to restore it to its former glory. Even though it was well preserved, there was still a dire need to repair it and ensure it was stable. It is the main spot of the Temple Square. Along the antique theater and the Vienna lighthouse, it emanates the former greatness of this roman town, and its capacity to preserve its most impressive monuments! It is 24 meters long, 14.5 meters wide and over 17 meters tall. Following guided tours allows you to go inside of that grandiose building. While you are waiting for that, I recommend you walk around to admire all of it !
