The Belgique Street is the crown jewel of the city’s so-called “Golden Triangle”, a prestigious area not far from Parc des Sources, located between the thermal baths and the opera house. This posh neighborhood, popular among wealthy “spa-water drinkers” of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, is home to a number of stunning villas and former palaces. The Venetian villa before you is the perfect example! Built in 1897 by local architect Henri Décoret, it is said to be one of the most impressive buildings in the city. It was commissioned by Jean-Baptiste Lambert, a Parisian antiquarian and art dealer. The latter’s refined taste and profession certainly played a part in the fabulous look of the villa, with its ornate façade, arched windows, twisted columns, cabbage-shaped capitals and intricate carvings. Notice, for example, the lions’ heads at the corners of the balconies. The building thus combines elements of both Venetian and Byzantine architecture. Originally based in the south of France, with two stores in Cannes and Marseille, Jean-Baptiste Lambert decided to settle in Vichy for ten years, in order to be closer to his noble clientele who came here to take the waters during the summer months. The Venetian Villa thus served both as a family home and a showcase for its owner’s wealth and business. The basement served as a warehouse, the first floor was where Lambert exhibited and presented his works to customers, and the top floor housed his living quarters. In 1911, the villa was bought by the famous Parisian art dealer Georges Bernheim, who also made it his home and gallery. Listed as a historic monument since 1990, the building is now divided into three separate private apartments. Although it’s been stripped of all its artistic treasures, the Venetian Villa remains a must-see architectural gem.
