Parc des Sources

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Vichy, The Water Frenzy
Napoleon III is everpresent in Vichy. It will be either him or another member of his family. Either way, his presence can be felt literally everywhere. The Parc des Sources is a prime example. This must-see leafy haven is a breath of fresh air right at the heart of the city. It was the first ever green space to be built in the so-called “Queen of Spa Towns”. In 1730, the initial plan was for it to be built between the Hall des Sources and the Sichon equestrian stadium further north. But its fate changed thanks to a woman. And not just any woman – Napoleon Bonaparte’s mother, Maria Letizia. She fell in love with the city of Vichy during a spa visit in 1799, but she was sad to see the swampy surroundings and cluttered buildings near the thermal baths. She felt that the city desperately needed a place for people to stroll. Her thoughts reached the ears of her son, Napoleon I, who, on his way to the Russian campaign, promptly signed a decree ordering the creation of the Parc des Sources. The park, stretching over an area the size of Venice’s St. Mark Square, was finally inaugurated in 1812. Perfectly located at the heart of Vichy’s spa action, it quickly became a go-to spot for socializing and meeting friends. Even more so when, between 1815 and 1861, it got covered walkways, a music kiosk, several boutiques, and terraces, serving over 4000 coffees daily. Wealthy women would come here to parade their finest attire. The Parc des Sources, listed as a historical monument since 1994, was bought by the city of Vichy in 2020 and is currently being renovated. The goal is to breathe new life into this beloved landmark, in keeping with the spirit of 21st-century Vichy. Sounds to me like a very promising project!
