Introducing the Church of Notre-Dame-des-Malades, aka the Church of Our Lady of the Sick. It’s much more recent than the neighborhood it calls home and it’s a somewhat unique monument in Vichy. Built between 1925 and 1956, during the interwar period, it was but an extension of the Saint-Blaise church just behind it. Interestingly, Vichy happened to be booming during this rather complicated period in history, with people moving in from the countryside, many of them religious – hence the extension of the church. But money was tight, despite the major fund-raising efforts on the part of the faithful and spa-goers. So they made a bold choice – they used concrete to minimize costs! Locals weren’t happy at first, but over time, they came around. The rather simple and modern façade might not be to everyone’s liking, but wait until you see the inside! Believe me when I say it’s a feast for the eyes, with stunning Art Deco décor everywhere you look. From the variety of materials to the artistic techniques used, it’s truly a masterpiece. Before you leave, don’t miss the walnut-wood statue of the Black Madonna. People have been praying to her for ages and she’s known for her many miracles – it’s time she got the recognition she deserves!
