St. Mark’s Square is the heart of Venice, and known as the city’s only “grand” square. Its construction began in the 9th century, but its final layout wasn’t completed until 1177. Well… By layout, we mean its dimensions—180 metres long and 70 metres wide—as it took another century to pave the area. Today, it’s full of history, architecture and tourism. But in the past, it was the Republic’s most significant political, religious, and administrative hub. All year round, the square welcomes up to 30 million visitors, who marvel at its iconic buildings, such as the majestic St. Mark’s Basilica and the prestigious Doge’s Palace. These architectural wonders place St. Mark’s Square among the most beautiful plazas in the world—which Napoleon famously called “the most elegant drawing room in Europe”. When it’s not flooded during the acqua alta season, the Venetian square is a constant source of life and activity. As locals and tourists come and go, the square has become a permanent home to a flock of pigeons.
