Punta della Dogana

Having reached the tip of the Dorsoduro district, you’ve also arrived at the Punta della Dogana. In the 15th century, ships docked right here for customs inspections. If the inspection passed, the chain blocking the canal would be lifted, and the vessels continued to the city’s main trading hub — the Rialto. In the 17th century, the customs buildings were rebuilt to blend in with the newly completed Santa Maria della Salute Basilica. However, since June 2009, these buildings have served an entirely different purpose. Just like Venice’s Palazzo Grassi, the Punta della Dogana is now an exhibition space owned by French billionaire François Pinault. A devoted art collector, he has displayed part of his personal collection right here. Visitors can explore modern and contemporary art through paintings, photographs and sound installations in the gallery’s paid exhibitions. Even if you don’t go inside, make sure to take in the view. It’s a stunning panorama, and has been inspiring artists for centuries. Directly across the water, you can see the San Giorgio Maggiore island and its basilica. And to your right, you’ll find the lively Saint Mark district.
