The Dorsoduro District

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Venice, At one with the “Serenissima”
The southwestern part of the city is home to the Dorsoduro district – translating to “hard back”. It takes its name from the firmer, more solid ground on which it was built. Although its art galleries and universities give it an artistic and cultural vibe, Dorsoduro is better known as the chic area of Venice. Its streets and canals are much wider than those in the city centre, creating an intimate and romantic atmosphere, perfect for a leisurely stroll. Its calm ambiance during the day contrasts greatly with its bustling nightlife. The lively bars and restaurants, clustered around Campo San Barnaba and Campo Santa Margherita, flow with students and young locals at nighttime.
