Marina
This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Vannes, The city of the Veneti
A visit to the Vannes marina located just a stone’s throw from the historic centre, is a real treat. Both the left and right banks are charming, with well-cleared quays surrounded by small shops, bars and restaurants. Strategically located at the end of the Gulf of Morbihan, the port of Vannes was the most important port in Brittany until the 17th century.
It played a crucial role in the town’s development. With its direct access to the Atlantic Ocean, it enabled easy trade with other regions of France, as well as with foreign countries. Moreover, the port was connected to the river network, linking the land to the coast.
The town naturally developed around its port, building quays and basins, as well as warehouses and commercial buildings, thriving on its commercial activity, notably as a result of the salt produced in the region’s salt marshes.
Nowadays, it’s a refreshing walk that will take you to the Pointe de Conleau. A truly bracing walk, the perfect way to round off your discovery of the surrounding region.
