Lices square
This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Vannes, The city of the Veneti
This square, which opens out along the street, is known as the Lices square. It is one of the main public squares in Vannes. The square was used in the 14th century by the Dukes of Brittany for jousts and tournaments, thanks to its proximity to the now-demolished Château de l’Hermine.
Hence the name lices, meaning enclosed field where jousts were held! With no more fights on the horizon, the Lices square is now surrounded by shops and friendly local bars. The square also hosts a market twice a week, on Wednesday and Saturday mornings.
This is also the site of the Vannes covered market. It’s the perfect place to take a culinary break and discover the flavours of the region. Here you’ll find around thirty shopkeepers, delighted to help you discover their various specialities.
In addition to regional products, with a special focus on oysters, fish and shellfish from the local coastal fishery, you’ll find a host of caterers both local and foreign eager to introduce you to flavours from all over the world, so why not take a break for a unique meal?
