As you’ve probably noticed, Robson Street is one of the city’s busiest shopping streets. In 1895, its high concentration of shops led to the installation of tramway lines. The street is named after the politician John Robson, who was Prime Minister during the reign of Queen Victoria. You may still hear people who sometimes refer to as Robsonstrasse in German. It’s worth noting that the first half of the 20th century was strongly influenced by post-war German immigration, and the part of the street you’re in was renowned as the center of German culture and commerce. Small boutiques have slowly been replaced by big brands and high-end restaurants, transforming Robson Street into the most expensive street in town. In the old version of Canadian Monopoly, Robson Street was ranked as one of the two most expensive properties in the city!
