The Manoel Theatre

06 le theatre manoel poi grand

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Valletta, Step Into the World of the Knights of St. John

In the heart of Valletta, it pays to keep your eyes open — history is often hiding in plain sight, just like the Manoel Theatre, over on your left.

Back in the 18th century, theatre was reserved for the elite, but one Portuguese aristocrat decided to change that. In 1731, António Manoel de Vilhena funded the construction of this venue to provide what he called “honest entertainment” for the people,  a phrase carved above the entrance.

Legend has it that the first play performed here in 1732 starred the Knights of the Order of St John, members of a military and hospitaller order founded in 1050 who ruled Malta for 250 years.

Over time, the theatre passed into private hands and fell into disuse, especially during the 19th century when it was overshadowed by the grand Royal Opera House. The theatre reopened in 1960, and since then, it’s welcomed world-class performers, including the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra.

Considering its elegant interior and the variety of concerts and plays on offer, it’s earned a well-deserved reputation — not only for being the third-oldest theatre in Europe still in operation, but also for its rich cultural programming.
