The Grandmaster’s Palace
This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Valletta, Step Into the World of the Knights of St. John
It’s almost impossible to explore Valletta without the words “Knights of the Order of St John” echoing around you.
If you haven’t heard them yet, it’s only a matter of seconds—especially now that you’re standing in front of this magnificent building. This is the Grandmaster’s Palace — home to the leaders of the Order for over two centuries.
Built between 1570 and 1580, it was designed to impress, and it’s played a central role in the city’s life ever since. Under British rule, it became the residence of the Governor.
Since 1974, it’s been home to Malta’s House of Representatives and the President’s office. What’s more, the ceremonial changing of the guard takes place every 25 minutes outside the palace’s main entrance.
