The Covered Market

09 le marche couvert poi grand

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Valletta, Step Into the World of the Knights of St. John

Up, down, and up again… you can really work up a sweat with all this walking!

Which is exactly why you deserve a little break right here, at the covered market.

Originally founded in the 19th century by the Knights of the Order of St John, it hasn’t had an easy ride through history. Demolished for hygiene reasons, heavily bombed during World War II, and completely abandoned in the 1990s— the place has experienced its fair share of misfortune.

Thankfully, those days are long gone. With Valletta being named European Capital of Culture in 2018, the government brought the market back to life, as the centrepiece of a major renovation project. The result speaks for itself—just look at the building in front of you.

Now sleek and full of energy, the market runs on a simple three-part idea: Cook, Eat, Relax. Downstairs, there’s a supermarket where you can stock up on your next culinary creation. On the ground floor, you’ll find a spacious dining area where you can skip the cooking and go straight to the tasting. Upstairs, there’s a lounge area where you can unwind—or catch one of the site’s occasional cultural events.

At the covered market, you don’t just refuel your body — you recharge your whole spirit.
