The National Library
This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Valletta, Step Into the World of the Knights of St. John
Here it is, the stunning National Library, a Maltese treasure with elegant columns and a golden inscription.
Since its founding in 1796, this building has grown into one of the island’s most valuable institutions, thanks to countless donations to its literary collection over the years. Today, nearly four million volumes and historical documents are carefully preserved inside.
What’s more, it’s a goldmine for history lovers. Among its rarest treasures is the 1530 charter in which Emperor Charles V officially grants Malta to the Knights of the Order of St John. This document marked the start of their 250-year rule over the island.
Safe to say, the bar for historical records is set pretty high!
For those wondering about the statue out front, it depicts Queen Victoria, serving as a subtle reminder of the island’s past and present British influences.
