Lower Barrakka Gardens
This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Valletta, Step Into the World of the Knights of St. John
The Lower Barrakka Gardens resemble a green oasis overlooking the Grand Harbour, promising a peaceful moment in nature.
Amid the greenery and hibiscus flowers that brighten the paths, you’ll find a few monuments well worth admiring.
The first one you’ll likely spot is the grand Greek temple–style memorial dedicated to Sir Alexander John Ball. This British Vice-Admiral helped drive the French out of Malta at the end of the 18th century.
Not far from the memorial, and more modest in size, is a striking bronze sculpture by Antonio Sciortino, paying tribute to the defenders of Malta during the Great Siege of 1565.This historic event marked the failed attempt by the Ottoman Empire—formerly known as the Turks—to conquer the island, thwarted by the resistance of the Knights of the Order of St John. Beyond its history, this is also a place to simply sit back and enjoy the stunning waterfront view.
