Clerks’ Square

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Valence, The gate to the South
This is one of the town’s oldest squares: it was mentioned as Clerks’ Square as early as the 13th century. But already during the 5th century, it was a very important part of the city, with shops and markets. It was also where executions took place. Most notably, the execution of Louis Mandrin, an 18th-century smuggler, who attracted thousands of Valentinois to witness his death. This square is aptly named, since it’s located in the heart of Valence’s religious district, a few steps away from the cathedral and the Pendentif, the two main religious buildings. Over the centuries, it has also been an important cultural venue, hosting numerous theatrical performances, much to the delight of the people of Valence, who came to be entertained by a pleasant show. Today, it’s as lively as ever: every Saturday, the square hosts the market, as well as numerous cafés, restaurants and shops that attract both locals and visitors. Charming and authentic, Clerks’ Square is the ideal place to feel the pulse of the city!
