Capitol Dungeon and Nougaro statue

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Toulouse, The Pink City
Just behind the Capitole, you’ll notice a tower that seems to have appeared out of nowhere, in stark contrast to the overall architecture of the square. Crowned by a Flemish-style belfry, it was built in 1525 to house gunpowder and the municipal archives. These administrative documents were of the utmost importance at the time, serving as a testament to the city’s power and freedom. Among them were written laws, police investigations, city financial records and other administrative documents. The city’s archives were well protected, kept in a safe that could only be opened with 8 different keys held by each capitoul, who governed the city at the time. This perfectly preserved tower was restored by Viollet-le-Duc in the 19th century and has served as the headquarters of the tourist office since 1946. The Capitol dungeon overlooks the Square de Gaulle, where you can pause and unwind at the very heart of the town. Here, you’ll find the Maternity statue by the Toulousian sculptor Jean-Louis Toutain. Notice the artist’s skillful use of soft, flowing lines in the piece depicting a woman playing with her child. Next to the fountain is a statue of the Toulousian singer Claude Nougaro. This songwriter, poet and performer holds a special place in the hearts of its residents. Toulousians adore him, and his heartfelt homage to the city in his song “Toulouse” shows how those feelings are reciprocated. Why not let this song be the soundtrack to your visit?
