Toulon Harbour

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Toulon, the Historic Naval City
Before you set off to explore, you should know that Toulon’s harbour offers more than its beauty. It’s France’s largest naval port and a key military base, home to most of the French navy’s fleet.
All of this is housed within the city’s historic arsenal, which dates back to the 15th century and now covers a vast 268 hectares. Famous French engineer Vauban once called Toulon “the most beautiful harbour in Europe,” and it’s easy to see why.
The harbour is divided into two parts: the Petite Rade, with its wild coves, little fishing ports and quiet beaches; and the Grande Rade, home to the Mourillon beaches and the popular Méjean and Magaud coves, perfect for a scenic seaside walk.
Ships have been docking here since Antiquity, when Greek and Roman vessels first arrived.
In the 17th century, Vauban fortified the harbour with a series of forts, turning Toulon into one of the largest naval ports of its era. Today, the harbour is integral to the city’s identity, offering peaceful waterfront strolls and a deep connection to Toulon’s maritime past.
