Sainte-Marie-de-la-Seds Cathedral

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Toulon, the Historic Naval City
Welcome to the Sainte-Marie-de-la-Seds Cathedral, the oldest building in the city.
The first church on this site was built in the 5th century, but the version you see today dates back to the 11th century, with renovations made over the years to accommodate a growing number of worshippers.
The architecture is Romanesque, and the southern-style façade features four columns framing the entrance.
The stained-glass windows were replaced after being badly damaged in World War II, so they have a more recent look. The cathedral has been the seat of the Diocese of Toulon since 1957.
It stands with quiet dignity on the square that shares its name, right in the heart of the city’s historic centre.
