The CN Tower

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Toronto, Exploring Eastern Canada

A key part of Toronto’s skyline, the CN Tower is Canada’s most iconic symbol. Before gaining all this fame, this engineering masterpiece was built for practical purposes. Toronto’s first skyscrapers were built in the 1960s and 1970s, but many households experienced significant reception issues. This problem needed to be solved… so after four months of construction, carried out by 1,500 workers, this broadcasting tower was inaugurated in 1976. Fun fact: A special lifting helicopter had to be used to install the antenna. This was supposed to take only 12 minutes, but due to the complexity of the maneuver, it took 36 minutes to complete. The CN Tower held the record for the tallest tower in the world for 34 years, standing at 553 meters, and is listed among the Seven Wonders of the Modern World. This ranking, established by the American Society of Civil Engineers, also includes the Channel Tunnel and the Empire State Building. Still used for telecommunications broadcasting, the structure has also become a major tourist attraction, drawing over 1.9 million visitors every year, who come to admire its panoramic views. For those looking to take the experience to the next level, nothing beats the EdgeWalk. This thrilling attraction allows visitors to walk along an outdoor ledge, 356 meters above the ground, for about 30 minutes. If you’re afraid of heights, maybe give this one a miss… But for the daring—go for it!
