St Andrew’s Church

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Toronto, Exploring Eastern Canada

A surprising piece of history, lost in the city’s ultra-modern glass landscape, St Andrew’s Church immediately catches our eye. Designed in 1876 by a Canadian architect and businessman, this religious building is a place of worship for a Presbyterian congregation, where laypeople are elected to lead. Its remarkable Neo-Romanesque architecture and medieval details, such as the turreted towers, reflect the Scottish origins of the religious fraternity that settled here. Its location sparked controversy in the 19th century, as it was established in an industrial, and later modern, area—far from the residential neighborhoods of its faithful. Yet, its place remained unchanged. Therefore, as we stroll through this district, we see this historic place of worship, which is still in use, and we are welcomed by its warm interior.
