Nakamise Shopping Street

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Tokyo, Where tradition meets modernity
Welcome to Nakamise-dori, one of Japan’s oldest shopping streets. To walk down this vibrant avenue is like stepping straight into the heart of Japanese tradition. In front of you, these 90 stalls are mostly family businesses passed on through generations, offering an unforgettable shopping experience in what many call the “Phoenix City.” Here, there are so many souvenirs you can bring back home: traditional umbrellas, folding fans, lucky cat charms, wooden kokeshi dolls—and of course, plenty of local delicacies that all tourists love. It’s also a true haven for anyone drawn to Japanese craftsmanship and artisanal goods. This street wasn’t built here in the 18th century for no reason, since it’s right next to one of Tokyo’s most sacred temples. As pilgrims regularly passed by here, this place quickly became a thriving hub for merchants and shoppers alike. Although it was destroyed by the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923 and again during World War II, Nakamise-dori has been faithfully rebuilt each time— and today, it continues to welcome visitors from all around the world. This market displays a traditional appearance with its wooden store fronts, green-tiled roofs, and glowing lanterns—immersing all tourists into Japanese tradition. Keep in mind that this street can get quite packed, so if you’re bargain hunting, don’t hesitate to check the nearby side streets—you might just stumble upon the same treasures at even better prices!
