Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Tokyo, Where tradition meets modernity

Crossing this bridge is the perfect moment to dive into a quick overview of the many festivals and religious celebrations that take place across Japan each year! An island with history deeply rooted into religion and tradition, it’s only logical for the capital to be home to countless festivals and events, attracting huge crowds for these celebrations known as Matsuri. From the most imposing to the most unusual, here’s a glimpse at some of these vibrant festivities. Two of the most important Shinto festivals in the country are the Sanja Matsuri and the Sanno Matsuri. The Sanja Matsuri, held in May, honors the three men who founded Tokyo’s oldest temple, Sensō-ji, with parades, music, and traditional dances. The Sanno Matsuri, celebrated in June, is dedicated to both the guardian deity of Tokyo and the reign of the Tokugawa clan during the Edo period. In July, Tokyo’s skies light up with the massive Sumida River Fireworks Festival, quite famous as it draws more than a million spectators every year. Spring is also a magical time that celebrates the arrival of the cherry blossoms through many events. Parks across the city are transformed into breathtaking, illuminated gardens—a sight you won’t find anywhere else in the world. There are plenty of other cultural events to see in Japan, such as the Comiket, an absolute must for otaku, which are the manga and anime fans, the Tokyo Game Show for video gamers, and the Anime Japan Fair for anime fans. These major events are all held at Tokyo Big Sight, one of Japan’s largest convention centers. If you’re into manga, games, or anime, you’ll be in heaven! For something a little different, you can experience the romantic Asakusa Toro Nagashi, where thousands of paper lanterns float down the river. Otherwise, join the lively Roppongi Hills Bon Odori, where visitors dance alongside performers to traditional rhythms. You can also cheer for the energetic Yosakoi Oedo Soran Matsuri, a modern dance competition between 45 teams; or experience the cheeky Kanamara Matsuri, the fertility festival where all kinds of genital symbols are on full display! Last but not least, how could I have forgotten one of Japan’s most iconic traditions: sumo wrestling! There’s even a neighborhood in Tokyo where you might spot a few sumo wrestlers, watch them train, or even attend a match—if you plan ahead. This is just a small introduction to everything Tokyo has to offer, especially from spring to summer. Though rest assured, events happen all year round, with hundreds to choose from. There’s something here for everyone!
