St Andrew’s Cathedral

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Sydney, Through the neighbourhoods
You are standing in front of St Andrew’s Cathedral, which is the oldest cathedral in Australia. Built between 1837 and 1868, it showcases a beautiful neo-Gothic style, often found in churches from England.
The first plans date back to 1819, but the project was quickly abandoned due to a lack of funding. Twenty years later, a new project began in a different location, and thirty years after that, St Andrew’s Cathedral finally opened to public.
Inside, you’ll find a remarkable pipe organ still used for recitals and concerts, along with stunning Gothic-style decor highlighted by Sydney sandstone, giving visitors an impressive sense of grandeur.
