Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Sydney, The Emerald City

In front of you stands a key landmark of Sydney’s business district: the General Post Office. Featuring sandstone walls, it’s a fine example of the architectural style used during the 19th century by the settlers. Inaugurated in 1874, this post office replaced the old one, which had become too small to deal with the growing demands. Its mostly neo-classical architecture features a 100-metre-long façade and a clock tower, nearly 60 metres high. While it served as the city’s central post office until 1996, the building is now home to cafes, restaurants, shops, and a hotel. It remains a symbol of Sydney’s historical past, thanks to its architecture. One of its most striking features is the sculptures along its façade, depicting some of the most important figures in the city’s history. At the time of its construction, the clock tower made it the tallest building in the city.
