St Mary’s Cathedral

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Sydney, The Emerald City
The construction of this grand cathedral began in 1821, under the direction of Governor Lachlan Macquarie who wanted a neo-Gothic style. Destroyed by a fire just a few years after its completion, reconstruction began in 1868. The work would continue for many years, with the cathedral finally being completed in 1928, but its interior decorations weren’t finished until 40 years later. The two spires, which reach a height of 75 meters, were added in 2000. St Mary’s Cathedral is the largest church in Sydney and one of the tallest in Australia. It has undoubtedly left its mark on history, both for its architecture and its religious duties. In recognition of its importance, it was granted the title of basilica in 1932 and later designated as a national shrine. Feel free to step inside and admire the beautiful decor!
