Botanical Garden

Ce point d’intérêt est disponible en audio dans le circuit: Visit Sydney, The Emerald City
Opened in 1816, this magnificent Botanical Garden is one of Sydney’s must-see attractions. With over a million plant species spanning across 30 hectares of gardens, it is the perfect place to enjoy a peaceful stroll, away from the city’s hustle and bustle, although you will likely encounter plenty of other visitors along the way. Originally, this park was created to provide settlers with a place to grow their vegetables. Over time, thanks to the various species brought back from overseas travel, it evolved into a true botanical garden. Certain herbs date all the way back to the first settlers, around 200 years ago! The garden owes its flourishing existence to the determined botanist and settler, Charles Fraser. Originally, Australia’s soil is very difficult to cultivate due to the harsh climate for trees. However, Fraser managed to create this garden by discovering and bringing in plant species from abroad to grow here. He is also responsible for naming many Australian plants that had never been discovered before his arrival. As you wander through the gardens, you will notice some rare or endangered flowers and trees, exotic plants, camellias, begonias, as well as contemporary sculptures that adorn every corner of the lush green pathways. You’ll also spot the grand Government House, placed a little higher up in the park. Built in the 19th century, this neo-Gothic style house has been the governor’s residence since 1845, the year the building was completed. The views of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge from the park are truly unique, making it one of the most visited places in Sydney!
