Pheasant Bridge
This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Strasbourg, From Petite France to Greater Europe
This historic little bridge, known as Pheasant Bridge or simply Swing Bridge, offers a picturesque view of Petite France. It swivels from right to left to allow barges and boats to pass. This bridge, built of steel and wood, dates back to 1888. In 1999, it was equipped with a hydraulic system. Together with the rest of the district, it’s classified as a World Heritage site. It came to replace those before it, an old 14th-century wooden bridge, the first movable bridge of 1854 and the drawbridge of 1869. It’s one of the key attractions of this historic district. If you stay a while, chances are you’ll see it in action to let pedestrians and boats pass through.
