Santa Ana Church

This point of interest is available as audio on the tour: Visit Seville, The Princess of the Guadalquivir
You’re now in the small square facing the Santa Ana Church. Known by locals as the “Cathedral of Triana”, this is the neighbourhood’s most iconic church. It was built on the orders of King Alfonso X, who wanted to honour Saint Anne, believing she cured his poor vision. For context, Alfonso X was the son of Ferdinand III, the king who recaptured Seville from the Moors. Alfonso founded a new settlement on this side of the Guadalquivir and commissioned a fortified church, since the area lay outside the city walls. You can still see the battlements crowning the tops of the towers. Inside, you’ll find a magnificent altarpiece, fully restored by the Andalusian Institute of Historical Heritage. The church is a cultural heritage site—and, according to local legend, children baptised here are blessed with beautiful voices, perfect for singing flamenco.
