Welcome to the San Francisco Church and Convent—one of Santiago’s most important historical landmarks and the oldest colonial building still standing in the city. It was founded in 1622 by the Franciscan friars, to whom it owes its name and long legacy. Take a moment to look at the thick stone walls, that have stood firm through centuries of powerful earthquakes. However, the bell tower hasn’t had the same luck. It’s been rebuilt three times and now reflects the Victorian style of its 19th-century reconstruction. In the early 20th century, part of the convent was sold to make way for the Paris/London district, while the rest became the Museum of Colonial Art, located next to the church. You can explore the museum for a small fee, and step back into Chile’s and Latin America’s colonial era through a fascinating collection of religious paintings, including an extensive series on the life of Saint Francis of Assisi. You’ll also find sculptures, tools once used by Franciscan monks, and other artifacts. One room is dedicated to the poet Gabriela Mistral, who donated her Nobel Prize medal to the museum, and you can enjoy the quiet serenity of the old cloister during your visit. Entry to the church is free, and there are a few highlights you won’t want to miss. Look up to admire the coffered ceiling in the nave, crafted in the intricate Mudéjar style, and make your way to the altar to see the icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. According to legend, this image belonged to Santiago’s founder, Pedro de Valdivia, who believed the Virgin Mary protected him during his conquests. Who knows—maybe she’s still watching over the place. After all, this is the only church in the city that has survived fifteen earthquakes measuring over 7 on the Richter scale.
